FAQ
Files & Image Quality
What file formats do you accept?
We accept all common image formats, including TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and PDF.
For the best results, we recommend TIFF files in an RGB colour space, ideally Adobe RGB. sRGB files are also perfectly fine and very common, especially for photography and digital artwork.
If you’re unsure about your file, feel free to send the image to us at info@thegicleeshop.com before submitting your order.
What resolution should my file be?
Best practice is to supply files at 300 ppi at the final print size. This ensures maximum detail and sharpness, especially for smaller and mid-sized prints.
That said, larger prints don’t always need to meet 300 ppi to look great. A large print viewed from several feet away can look excellent at a lower resolution.
To help with this, we offer a Printability Calculator that:
- Takes your image dimensions and intended print size
- Calculates the effective print resolution
- Tells you whether the file is ideal, acceptable, or not recommended
This lets you make an informed decision before ordering, without guesswork.
Can I print from a JPEG?
Yes. JPEGs are one of the most common file types we print from. Just keep in mind that JPEGs use compression, which can introduce artefacts if the file has been edited or saved several times.
As much as possible, saving as an uncompressed JPEG at the highest quality level will ensure the best results.
Do you review files before printing?
We perform a basic technical check on all files before printing.
Our process is designed to produce your print exactly as ordered, following your selected size, cropping, and border options. No creative editing or image adjustments are made.
As part of our check, we ensure files are set up with an appropriate RGB colour profile for printing. In most cases, this is handled automatically. If a file presents a colour issue that could significantly affect the final print, we’ll reach out before proceeding.
Otherwise, the file is prepared and sent directly to print.
Do you colour correct files?
No. Files are printed according to the submitted file and selected options. Minor technical adjustments, such as colour space conversion, may be applied where necessary for print production. No creative editing is performed. We will contact you if an issue is identified that could materially affect the final print.
Papers & Printing
What is giclée printing?
Giclée printing is a high-resolution inkjet printing process that uses archival pigment inks and acid-free fine art papers to produce museum-quality fine art prints. It offers exceptional detail, smooth tonal transitions, accurate colour, and long-term longevity.
What papers do you offer?
We offer a thoughtfully curated selection of fine art and photographic papers that produce colour beautifully, print consistently, and hold up over time. Each paper has been selected for its surface, tonal response, and suitability for professional giclée printing.
Our collection includes:
- Matte and textured cotton papers for a soft, painterly look
- Smooth fine art papers for clean, modern images
- Photo papers for rich blacks and higher contrast
If you’re unsure which paper is right for your work, our Paper Guide provides detailed comparisons and recommendations.
Are your prints archival?
All of our prints are produced on professional giclée inkjet printers using archival pigment inks.
Prints made on our fine art archival papers are considered archival fine art prints, offering excellent longevity when properly displayed and cared for.
We also offer select non-archival papers. While these papers are not classified as archival, independent testing by Wilhelm Imaging Research (WIR) shows that they still offer excellent print permanence, with longevity ratings that compare very well to many archival papers under typical display conditions.
Do prints include a white border?
Border treatments are selected during the ordering process:
- Borderless: Your artwork is printed edge-to-edge at the exact size selected.
- Added Border: Extra white space is added evenly around your image while keeping the image at the selected size. The total paper size increases by the border width you choose.
Example: A 12x24 print with 1" added border is a 12x24 image on 14x26 paper. - Included: Image and border fit within your chosen print size. Great for ready-made frames. Border widths vary from ¼" to 2", depending on the print size and image ratio.
Example: an 8x10 print with included borders may be printed as a 6.61x9.5 image on 8x10 paper.
Can I request custom paper or sizing?
If you would like a custom size print, please reach out to our team for more information.
You can also submit a request for a paper that we don't currently stock. However, we can't guarantee that we will be able to order it in for your order.
Ordering & Proofing
How do I place an order?
Our ordering process is designed to be as straight-forward and self-serve as possible.
Start by choosing a paper from our curated selection. Then choose your size and border treatments.
You can then upload your image and crop it according to the ratio of your selected size.
Can I request test prints?
We do not offer test prints or proofs specifically. If you'd like to see a 'test' before committing to a larger order or larger size, you can order a smaller-sized print on your selected paper.
Can I make changes after ordering?
Because all prints are custom made-to-order, we’re unable to make changes once printing has begun.
If your order has not yet gone into production, we’ll do our best to accommodate changes. Please contact us as soon as possible after placing your order so we can confirm what’s still possible.
Once printing has started, the order is considered final.
Turnaround & Shipping
What is your turnaround time?
For most standard orders, we aim to have prints completed and ready to ship in 3-5 business days.
How are prints packaged?
Our small prints up to 10x10 are generally packaged and shipped flat. Flat packed prints have the image protected by glassine, and corners protected inside a rigid mailer.
Larger prints are generally packaged and shipped in 4" mailing tubes. Rolled prints have the image protected by glassine with foam inserts to prevent the print from shifting too much inside the tube.
Interleaving between prints is always used when there are multiple prints in the same order. This protects against surface friction and damage.
Will my prints arrive rolled or flat?
Prints up to 10x10 are usually shipped flat.
Larger prints are shipped rolled in a tube.
Can I pickup my order?
The Giclée Shop is entirely online and as such does not have a pick-up option.
Returns, Issues & Exchanges
Do you accept returns or exchanges?
All prints are made to order using customer-uploaded files. Because of the custom nature of our products, all sales are final and we do not accept returns or exchanges, nor do we offer refunds for:
- change of mind after purchase
- dissatisfaction with the colour, contrast, tonal range, or overall appearance of the final print, including differences between on-screen display and printed output
- issues caused by low-resolution, poor-quality, or incorrectly prepared files
- sizing or cropping choices selected at checkout
You can read our full returns policy here.
What if my print arrives damaged?
If your order is damaged, defective, or contains a confirmed production error (such as the wrong size, wrong image), please contact us at info@thegicleeshop.com within 48 hours of delivery so that we can make it right.
When contacting us, please include:
- Order #
- Clear photos of the damage/defects
- Photos of the packaging (including the shipping box)
Once confirmed, we will reprint and reship the affected items at no cost. In most cases, no return of the damaged print is required.
What if there's a printing issue?
We take quality control seriously and inspect prints before they ship. If there’s a printing issue caused by our production process, please contact us and we’ll review the issue and make it right.
Because all prints are custom made-to-order, concerns must be reported promptly and before framing or display. We may request photos to help assess the issue.
What if I made a mistake with my file?
Files are printed as submitted and according to the selected options. We’re unable to offer replacements or refunds for issues that result from the supplied file, including resolution, cropping, colour, or image content.
If you’re unsure about your file before ordering, we encourage you to reach out — we’re happy to review it in advance.
